Alkitab adalah sebutan untuk kitab suci umat Kristiani.
Alkitab itu meskipun umumnya dicetak sebagai satu jilid buku,
sebenarnya merupakan kumpulan dari 66 kitab yang secara resmi diakui
oleh umat Kristen sebagai kitab yang diilhami oleh Tuhan Allah. Kadang-kadang dipakai sebutan Injil untuk kitab suci orang Kristen, tetapi ini tidak benar, karena yang disebut sebagai kitab-kitab Injil itu hanyalah empat dari 66 kitab termaksud, yaitu empat kitab pertama dalam bagian Perjanjian Baru.
Kata "Alkitab" berasal dari bahasa Arab, Al dan Kitab , yang secara harfiah berarti "kitab itu" atau "buku itu", di mana kata Al
merupakan kata sandang khas dalam bahasa Arab. Dalam Kitab Suci agama
Kristen sendiri, istilah Alkitab (yang berasal dari istilah Arab) tidak
dipakai, karena Kitab Suci agama Kristen diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Indonesia dari bahasa aslinya, yaitu bahasa Ibrani, Aram dan Yunani.
Oleh orang Kristen di Indonesia, istilah "Alkitab" dipakai sebagai sebutan untuk Kitab Suci (dalam makna serupa dengan kata Bible dalam bahasa Inggris), yaitu kumpulan Kitab Suci gabungan dari Kitab Suci agama Yahudi (Alkitab Ibrani/Perjanjian Lama/Old Testament) dan kitab-kitab yang ditulis oleh orang-orang Kristen mula-mula (Perjanjian Baru/New Testament). Alkitab sendiri sebenarnya dapat juga merujuk kepada Kitab Suci agama Islam, Al Qur'an, walaupun di Indonesia sendiri tidak pernah dipakai karena untuk menghormati agama Kristen.
Alkitab terdiri atas dua bagian utama, yaitu Perjanjian Lama dan Perjanjian Baru. Bagian-bagian utama ini disebut "Perjanjian" karena Allah bangsa Israel membuat perjanjian kepada manusia. Di dalam Perjanjian Lama perjanjian itu dibuat dengan Nuh, Abraham, Ishak, Yakub, Musa dengan bangsa Israel dan Daud. Bagian Perjanjian Lama (Old Testament) sendiri sebenarnya merupakan Kitab Suci agama Yahudi, yang memuat cerita tentang nabi-nabi agama Yahudi.
Di dalam Perjanjian Baru,
yang ditulis oleh orang-orang Kristen yang pertama, perjanjian itu
diperbarui lagi antara Allah dengan seluruh umat manusia melalui Yesus Kristus.
Sebagai Kitab Suci agama Yahudi, hampir semua buku dalam Perjanjian Lama ditulis dalam bahasa Ibrani, kecuali beberapa bagian yang ditulis dalam bahasa Aram contohnya kitab Daniel. Sedangkan semua buku Perjanjian Baru ditulis dalam bahasa Yunani dengan sejumlah kata-kata bahasa Aram (bahasa daerah di Israel pada waktu itu) dan bahasa Latin (bahasa pemerintah Romawi yang berkuasa pada masa itu), walaupun Yesus Kristus sendiri yang berbangsa Yahudi diyakini sehari-harinya berbicara dalam bahasa Aram.
